5 Tips in Taking Care of Your Delicate Necklaces

If you are the type who likes to collect jewellery, then proper care and storage is essential.  Fine jewellery, most especially, are quite expensive so we want to be able to make them last long enough.  We might be tempted to get a little bit carefree when attending to our jewellery, but these pieces need as much care as we do.  It just takes a little bit of getting used to and it won’t have to be so troublesome.

Because of the beauty and charm of small and delicate necklaces Australia fashion gurus would always recommend them as part of your collection.  But necklaces, no matter the style, can get easily tangled, cut-off or broken.

If you have inherited some heirloom pieces, then it is quite evident that your mother or grandmother may have been very keen in taking care of jewellery, and perhaps, you might want to ask them a thing or two about it. But for your convenience, we have put together a short list of some tips in taking care of your necklaces.

TIP#1:  DON’T SLEEP WITH YOUR NECKLACES

Sleeping with your jewellery can harm the jewellery or you, more so with your necklaces.  You might break the chain, damage a pendant, bend a prong or lose a stone while you roll in bed.  You may also wake up with your necklace tangled to your hair or stuck on your sheets. These may cause severe damage to your necklaces. You might also get scratched or pierced accidentally.  So it is best and safer for you and your jewellery to spend the night apart.

TIP#2:  STORE THEM SEPARATELY

Storage is very important in jewellery, especially your necklaces. It is a common problem among women to have their necklaces all tangled together because they were not stored properly and separately.  When that happens, it takes too much time untangling them, or worse, you might need to go to the jeweller to help you cut off some chains.

Your necklaces should have their own separate space in your jewellery box.  Not only does this save them from damages, it also saves you time to locate a necklace the moment you need it.

TIP#3:  DON’T SWIM WITH YOUR NECKLACES

When you go to the beach or take a swim at the pool, don’t forget to take them off.  Salt in seawater and chlorine in pool water can both damage your jewellery.  On top of that, there’s a very big chance that you might lose them in the water while you are taking a swim.

TIP#4:  DON’T WEAR THEM DURING ACTIVITIES

Necklaces can be a cause of obstruction when you are doing physical activities, such as exercising or playing sports.  It might also fall off and get lost while you are too occupied with your activity.  If your body is acidic, increased sweat will also increase the damage on your necklaces.  Less is more when doing sports and exercise, and so it is best to stow them away for the meantime.

TIP#5:  AVOID PUTTING ON LOTION OR PERFUME WITH YOUR NECKLACE ON

Lotions and perfume have chemicals that can react unfavourably to your necklaces.  So, if you want to keep their beauty and lustre, the trick is to always put them on last, and take them off first. This also goes for all the jewellery you’re wearing.

Some may get frustrated once they keep breaking theirs, but really, necklaces are not that hard to take care of once you get the hang of it.  They’re nice to have and do wonders to your OOTDs.
